A Milestone Year for Chess

This year marks two significant anniversaries: 20 years since the founding of the Prague Chess Society and the centenary of chess genius David Bronstein's birth. Pavel Matocha, the founder of the Prague Chess Society and director of the festival, reflects on this tradition: "I'm delighted that once again, we can present a match featuring the best Czech players against world-class opponents in the magnificent halls of the Municipal House."

A Legacy of Excellence

The CEZ Chess Trophy has a storied history. The first Prague match for David Navara, organized by Pavel Matocha in 2003, saw the young Czech grandmaster defeat the legendary Viktor Korchnoi. The inaugural CEZ Chess Trophy festival in 2005 featured a memorable match where Navara drew with former World Champion Anatoly Karpov.
