This is their first encounter since 2022, when Carlsen subtly accused the then-teenager Niemann of cheating during an over-the-board match at the Sinquefield Cup. Niemann's surprising win with the black pieces led to a controversy that eventually saw the American file a $100 million defamation lawsuit against Carlsen and Chess.com.

Though the lawsuit was dismissed in June 2023, the feud between the two remains unresolved in the eyes of many. The SCC match has garnered considerable attention, as chess enthusiasts and casual followers alike are eager to witness their long-awaited rematch.
