Midway Through the Candidates Tournament
14.04.2024 11:29 | NewsAs the Candidates Tournament crosses into its second half, the eighth round brought rematches and dramatic shifts in standing.
The round was highlighted by notable victories and strategic mastery. The tournament's youngest competitor scored a beautiful strategic win, adding to the excitement. Additionally, Hikaru Nakamura secured a crucial win in the derby, delivering a significant blow to Fabiano Caruana.
While this was a setback for Caruana, his chances remain alive as he trails the leader by only a point, though opportunities to catch up are dwindling.
In one of the most unexpected finishes of the round, Nakamura's tactical acumen overwhelmed Caruana, who missed a simple tactical trick leading to his resignation. Although he was already in a difficult position, Caruana overlooked a sequence starting with 30...Sd7? that led to disastrous consequences after several sharp moves by Nakamura, resulting in a winning advantage.
The match between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Nijat Abasov also drew attention as Nepomniachtchi wielded an unusual opening strategy. Despite this, Abasov was well-prepared and managed to hold the game to a draw without making significant errors throughout.
The excitement continued in the Praggnanandhaa R - Alireza Firouzja game, where Praggnanandhaa employed a rare opening move that initially took Firouzja by surprise. However, the game eventually balanced out and ended in a draw.
A strategic masterclass was evident in the match between Vidit Santosh Gujrathi and Gukesh D. Vidit's premature opening of the queen's wing backfired as Gukesh capitalized on the only open file and maneuvered his pieces effectively, leading to a commanding win.
As the tournament progresses, the standings see Nepomniachtchi and Gukesh leading, closely followed by Nakamura and Praggnanandhaa, all vying for the top spots.
