One of Europe's biggest chess events, the Prague Chess Festival, kicks off on February 25, 2025. Among the participants is Czech grandmaster Thai Dai Van Nguyen, who won the Challengers tournament in Wijk aan Zee in January.

He is ranked ninth in the Masters, but last year, he finished in joint second to fourth place, just half a point behind winner Nodirbek Abdusattorov. How does he evaluate the past year, and what are his expectations for the tournament? We spoke with him about it.

2024 was an extremely successful year for you. How do you evaluate it?

Winning gold at the Chess Olympiad is undoubtedly my greatest chess achievement. In addition, I secured gold at the European Club Cup and silver at the Prague Chess Festival. Overall, 2024 was the best season of my career.

You started the new year with another major triumph—winning the Challengers tournament in Wijk aan Zee. How do you perceive this success?

It may not seem like a huge success to the general public, but for me personally, it means a lot. Wijk aan Zee is one of the most prestigious chess events with a rich history. Moreover, this victory guarantees my participation in the Masters next year, giving me a unique opportunity to play against the world's top players.

The Prague Chess Festival is approaching. Last year, you finished in second place. How do you feel about this year’s edition?

From a purely chess perspective, my play last year was of very high quality. I had to prove myself against stronger opponents, starting from the last seeded spot. The result was a surprise even for me, so I cannot predict whether I will be able to surpass it. Most of all, I look forward to the competition itself.

Is there anyone you are particularly looking forward to playing against?

The field is so strong that it’s hard to choose just one opponent, but if I had to pick, it would definitely be Anish Giri. We have talked a few times, but we have never played against each other.

The Prague Chess Festival is now in its seventh edition and continues to grow. How do you perceive this event?

It is my favorite tournament. I have played here since the first edition, and each year, I am pleasantly surprised by the excellent organization and the high level of competition. Additionally, playing at home in Prague in front of our fans is always an unforgettable experience.
