CHAMPIONS CROWNED AT NORWAY CHESS TOURNAMENTS: MAGNUS CARLSEN AND JU WENJUN
08.06.2024 05:37 | NewsThe concluding round of the Norway Chess and Norway Chess Women tournaments set the stage for a dramatic finish, with multiple potential outcomes for the titles. The final matches were intense, as players vied for the top spots.
In the main tournament, Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana played to a draw in their classical game, necessitating an Armageddon tiebreaker. Carlsen triumphed in this decisive game, securing at least a share of first place and then awaited the result of Hikaru Nakamura versus Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu. Nakamura needed a victory but could only manage a draw. The young talent Praggnanandhaa excelled in the tiebreak, concluding the tournament on a high note. Remarkably, Praggnanandhaa achieved victories over both world number 1 Carlsen and world number 2 Caruana during the event.
With these outcomes, Carlsen captured his sixth Norway Chess title, a significant achievement especially considering his limited participation in classical tournaments recently.
In the Norway Chess Women tournament, a pivotal game between Anna Muzychuk and Humpy Koneru ended in a draw, eliminating Muzychuk’s chances of winning. Meanwhile, World Champion Ju Wenjun defeated challenger Lei Tingjie, making history as the first-ever winner of the inaugural Norway Chess Women tournament.
The final match featured young Indian prodigy Vaishali Rameshbabu against the esteemed Pia Cramling. Although Vaishali had a winning position at one stage, Cramling fought back strongly in the endgame, and the game concluded in a draw. Cramling won the subsequent tiebreak, finishing the tournament on a strong note.
As the tournaments conclude, we extend our congratulations to the champions, Magnus Carlsen and Ju Wenjun, for their outstanding victories. This year’s Norway Chess was unprecedented in scale, attracting a stellar lineup of competitors and offering thrilling high-stakes matches throughout. The introduction of the Norway Chess Women tournament was a landmark event, underscoring the tournament’s growth and dedication to promoting inclusivity in chess.
